Judges Statement:
The plans for the tallest residential tower ever built from
scratch in the heart of downtown Kansas City call for a 25-story, 315-unit apartment
building at 13th and Walnut Streets in the Kansas City Power & Light District. It will
be the first all-new residential high-rise downtown and the tallest downtown building
since the 17- story H&R Block headquarters opened in 2006.
One Light will have efficiency, one- and two-bedroom apartments ranging from
593 to 1,379 sq. ft., and the tower will include 28,000 square feet of amenities
including an outdoor rooftop pool, fitness center, demonstration kitchen, library,
a theater room and a fourth-level social space. Parking will be in the adjoining
garage. The first level of the tower will have 20-foot ceilings and include a lobby
and a leasing office. The second through fourth levels would have apartments on
the south and east sides and storage units on the west, where it abuts the parking
garage. Above that level, residential floors will have 9 foot ceilings until the top floor,
where grander penthouse units are planned.
