Determined from a competitive field of 665 entries, this year’s Merit and Grand Award winners can be justly

proud of their honors. They were determined only after careful consideration by the Gold Nugget judges.

This years panel included some of the the most creative and successful designers, planners and

builders in our industry.

Doucette Communities

Tucson, Arizona

Tom Doucette oversees management planning, property

acquisition, budgeting, production, and marketing of the

company’s development operations. Doucette Homes

and its related companies operate exclusively in the

Tucson and Northern Arizona marketplace.

At Doucette Homes, Inc., the communities of

Finisterra, Hill Farm, The Presidio at Williams Centre

and Civano Sol have garnered national and regional

awards for planning, design and marketing from the

National Association of Home Builders and the Pacific

Coast Builders Conference.

He received his B.A. in Business Administration

from California State University at Fullerton and a

M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Oregon, with

further graduate study at the University of California.

Mr. Doucette has been a licensed Real Estate Broker

and General Contractor in California and Arizona. He

is a Life Director and Past-President of the Southern

Arizona Home Builders Association , served five years

on the Metropolitan Housing Commission and as a

director of the Pima County Community Land Trust.

ARCHITECT, Residential Architect, Custom Home

Katie Gerfen is editor of design for ARCHITECT. In

this role, she also oversees Residential Architect and

Custom Home, as well as all design coverage for


Gerfen had previously served as Executive Editor,

Design for ARCHITECT, and as Editor of Residential


Michael Marini

Planet Home Living

Newport Beach, CA

Founder and CEO of Planet Home Living. Mr. Marini

launched Planet Home Living in 2007 in an effort to

bring better focus to product design in urban, new

home developments. Planet Home Living is currently

one of the leading small lot developers in Los Angeles.

Mr. Marini has 27 years of experience in the real

estate development industry with a primary focus on

attached/detached residential and mixed-use, urban

infill projects.

Previously the Director of Operations & Design for

The Olson Company, a leading California-based urban

infill developer of residential and mixed-use properties.

Previously the Director of Operations for Simpson

Housing Solutions (formerly Kaufman & Broad Multi-

Housing Group) whereas, he managed the development

of 78 projects totaling over 7,000 apartment homes

nationwide with a replacement value exceeding


Provided specialized workout experience in the

oversight and successful completion of various types of

distressed assets.

Mr. Marini has been a California State licensed Civil

Engineer since 1992.

Donald J. Ruthroff, AIA


Pleasanton, CA

With over 25 years of experience in architecture, Mr.

Ruthroff has a wide range of experience, extending

from production residential communities in the

United States and Mainland China to neighborhood

convenience centers in Pleasanton, California. As a

Senior Associate and Senior Architect, Mr. Ruthroff

has particular strengths in design, site planning and

entitlement services.

In his over 13 years at Dahlin Group, he has worked

in densities ranging up to 40 du/ac with his primary

area of focus in the western United States. Mr. Ruthroff

works with a mix of public and private home builder

clients as well as land owners and developers always

seeking to meet each client’s needs with targeted

design solutions that bring unique character to each

project. With training in both structural engineering and

architecture, Mr. Ruthroff brings a well-rounded breadth

of experience to his work.

Victor Mirontschuk,


EDI International

New York, NY

As the Founder and President of EDI, Victor also serves

as Chairman and Chief Operating Officer. He oversees

the operation of the firm’s offices in New York, Texas

and California. Victor’s architectural, planning and

management skills have moved EDI to the forefront

of planning, residential and commercial design. As an

innovator in the industry, he is respected for his ability

to develop planning and housing solutions that

address changing social needs. Some of his many

honors include being elevated to the College of the

Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for

his significant contributions to the profession, induction

into the National Association of Home Builders

(NAHB) Best in American Living Awards (BALA) Hall of

Fame for his significant impact of the residential design

and construction fields (both in 2016), and he was the

recipient of Professional Builder and Remodeler’s 1990

Professional Achievement Award for his leadership in

the design field.

Victor also leads the design of commercial, single

and multifamily developments from EDI’s award-

winning New York City office. He is an innovator in

the design industry and is respected for his ability

to positively affect the fabri of the communities EDI

designs within.

During his career Victor and his firm have received

over 150 national and regional design awards; has

published hundreds of articles and projects in such

periodicals as Urban Land, Builder and Professional

Builder; judged national design awards, and shared

his insights as a speaker at over 100 national and

international educational and trade conferences.

Peter Templeton


Templeton Planning Group

Newport Beach, CA

Peter Templeton has headed its planning, design,

and environmental firm for over 26 years and

has over 40 years’ experience in the planning

consultant business. He has been a frequent

speaker on hillside grading techniques at

APA workshops, UCI’s Paul Merage School of

Business, and the Chapman University for the

Roger C. Hobbs Institute for Real Estate, Law,

and Environmental Studies. The firm is currently

working on several large mixed use projects in

Southern California and a 1,500 unit zero net

energy project in West Sacramento.
