Judges Statement:

Inspired by the era of mid-century modern design and aims to reflect the clean simplicity, and integration with nature as the mid-century style

is known for. The form giving influence of the project is derived from an architectural expression of post and beam with ample windows, open floor plans, and desire

to bring the outdoors in. The architecture presents a disciplined use of material that integrates texture, stone accents, and natural color palette with the addition of a

modest yet playful splash of color. A conscious effort was made to synthesize vernacular tradition with a modern language to create architecture firmly rooted in its own

place and time. Symbolic forms and icons are borrowed from the past, and re-arranged in striking new compositions. The site is located in an upscale Marina del Rey

neighborhood, famed for its picturesque harbor views and home to the world’s largest man-made small craft harbor. Keeping the waterfront accessible to everyone to

the greatest extent possible is of paramount importance. Achieving this without compromising privacy and programmatic functions required thoughtful planning and

analysis. Common public spaces such as lobbies, mail rooms and boater’s facilities are consciously placed lower and along the public edges to ensure activated street

and pedestrian promenade while private residential courtyards were elevated. Ultimately, the design strives to create a harmonious balance between the interest of the

community as a whole and the livability of the residential units. The Judges were drawn to the design teams use of a textural, modern, neutral pallet complimented by an

effective use of both vertical and horizontal massing worthy of its top award.
