Sustainable Residential Community

Grand Award

Celadon at 9th & Broadway

San Diego, CA

Builder:

Turner Construction Company

Developer:

BRIDGE Housing Corporation

Architect:

SVA Architects and Studio E

Judges Statement:

Designed to target LEED Gold compliance, this 17-story tower

provides 250 units of affordable housing for special-needs populations, and shows

that designing with a social conscience can, and should, include designing with

an environmental one as well. The innovative use of photovoltaics on the south

façade adds visual interest while generating power for the building’s community

areas. Add on the rooftop solar hot water system, eco-roof with drought-tolerant

plantings, and integrated gardens, and the residents—who range from at-risk youth

to seniors—are not just tenants in a building, but members of a community that

serves as a shining example of how sustainable housing can be integrated into the

urban fabric.
