La Escuelita Education Center
Builder: Phase I:
Turner Construction; Phase II: McCarthy Building
Oakland Unified School District
SVA Architects, Inc.
If teaching by example is one of the more effective educational methods out there, then the children who attend La Escuelita Education Center in
Oakland will well prepared to lead lives of environmental stewardship. With solar panels to generate electricity, cisterns to gather rainwater for irrigation, and cooling
towers to provide natural air flow, the school makes a minimal impact on the Oakland city grid. And with features such as edible gardens, shaded walkways, and natural
daylight, the students are provided with a comfortable and engaging environment that stimulates interest as well as attention, and serves as an interactive tool to learn
about environmental principles and practices.
