Best Special Use Project
The Oaks Farms
San Juan Capistrano, CA
R. Douglas Mansfield Architect, Inc.
Photographer: Eric Figge Photography, Inc. Harrison Photographics
Reimagined from one of Southern California’s most revered equestrian facilities, this Special Use Project continues the equestrian family tradition
of the previous owner, Joan Irvine Smith. The task required the condensing and modernization of the commercial equestrian operation to make room for new homes.
Spectacular new amenities were built to support the commercial world class riding and training facility including a hunter arena, lunging ring, caretaker’s residence, hay
barn, wash rack, cross tie barn, and a Social Barn designed for the comfort of spectators. The new derby arena pays homage to its historic predecessor and a classic
and working water tower was artistically relocated. In particular, the Judges appreciated how every detail stayed true to the original heritage of the facility and the
replanting of heritage oaks along with the reuse of lumber from the old barns, fencing and stone throughout made it ever so easy to aware this fine show horse its well
deserved 1st place trophy.
